When Cuneiform Spoke Again

For centuries, cuneiform signs were visible but unread. Nineteenth-century scholars used multilingual inscriptions, especially the Behistun inscription, to unlock Old Persian, Elamite, and Babylonian forms. Decipherment was a collective achievement, despite the famous names attached to it.

Imagine being shown a page of signs with no teacher able to pronounce them. Their shapes are clear, but clarity of shape is not understanding. Decipherment begins by looking for constraints: repeated sequences, names, titles, parallel texts, and languages that may be related to something already known. A proposed reading becomes stronger when it explains new material rather than only the example that inspired it. The achievement is cumulative. One insight can open a door, but many independent checks are needed before the room beyond it becomes recognizable.

The Behistun inscription functioned like a vast comparative key because versions of the same royal proclamation appeared in three languages. Decipherment advanced through proposed sign values tested against names, grammar, and repeated passages. Rival scholars could make errors, but claims became reviewable rather than intuitive.

Evolution and the New Deep Time

Evolutionary science placed humanity inside a far older living history and changed how origin stories were interpreted across the modern world.

Geology had already expanded Earth’s age when Darwin and Wallace presented natural selection as a mechanism of biological change. Human origins moved from a short chronology into deep time. The debate was scientific, philosophical, social, and religious at once.

Deep time changes a story's proportions. A dynasty that seems ancient on a political timeline occupies only a small interval within the history of our species, and that history occupies a smaller interval within the history of life. The point is not to make human experience insignificant. It is to recognize that different questions require different scales. A fossil and a family genealogy can both be evidence, but they do not measure the same stretch of the past or preserve the same kinds of relationship.

Natural selection is not a plan moving inevitably toward humans. Traits spread when they affect reproduction within particular environments; drift, mutation, migration, and selection interact. Evolution produces branching adaptation, not a ranked march from “primitive” to “advanced.” Misusing it as a social hierarchy created destructive ideologies that biology does not justify.

Libraries from the Earth

Nag Hammadi and the Dead Sea Scrolls returned lost textual worlds, widening the evidence without producing one hidden master narrative.

The twentieth century returned entire libraries from the ground. Near Nag Hammadi in Egypt, codices preserved Coptic translations of diverse early Christian and related works. In caves near Qumran, the Dead Sea Scrolls preserved biblical manuscripts, community writings, legal texts, hymns, and apocalyptic literature.

The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi codices belong to different settings and should not be merged into one hidden library. The former illuminate Jewish textual worlds around the late Second Temple period; the latter include Coptic works important for studying diverse late antique religious ideas, including texts often described as Gnostic. Their languages, dates, physical forms, and contents differ. Placing them on one timeline can show relationships and contrasts, but assigning them one origin or one reason for burial would go beyond what the evidence supports.

These discoveries did not reveal one secret Bible. They revealed multiple communities, textual forms, interpretive worlds, and boundaries. They also showed that biblical texts could circulate in variant forms before later standardization.

Evidence boundaryAuthenticity, date, provenance, content, and truth are separate questions. A real ancient manuscript is not automatically a factual chronicle.

Pyramids Across the World

Monumental pyramidal forms arose in distinct societies whose engineering must be understood through local evidence before global theories are proposed.

Pyramidal forms appear in Egypt, Nubia, Mesopotamia, Mesoamerica, and elsewhere, but they were built at different times for different purposes with different materials. A broad base is a stable way to build upward. Shape alone cannot prove contact.

Stand, in imagination, at the base of a large monument and let the scale register before reaching for an explanation. Its builders solved problems of materials, alignment, labor, supply, and repeated execution. Those problems are not all solved by naming a ramp, just as they are not solved by naming lost technology. A full account must explain how parts of a system worked together. Archaeology approaches the task through traces: quarries, unfinished surfaces, transport evidence, tools, settlements, and the building itself. An unanswered detail remains a detail to investigate, not a blank check for any proposed solution.

Egypt’s large stone pyramids grew from local tomb traditions and are surrounded by quarries, workers’ settlements, tools, inscriptions, transport evidence, and changing designs. Mesoamerican pyramids were often temple platforms rebuilt in layers and used in living cities. A shared label can hide profound difference.
