Making a tablet

Clay was shaped, held in the palm or laid flat, and impressed with a cut reed stylus. Tablets could be dried, recycled, enclosed, sealed, or fired accidentally or intentionally.

Learning to write

Students copied wedges, signs, syllables, names, word lists, model documents, proverbs, mathematics, and advanced literature.

Reading signs

A sign may represent a word, syllable, number, or determinative. Context, grammar, genre, and period decide among possible values.

Archives and survival

Tablets survive unevenly. Fires could bake archives, while moisture, looting, excavation history, and ancient recycling destroyed context.

What the evidence supports

The tablets themselves preserve handwriting, erasures, fingerprints, school mistakes, colophons, sealing practices, archival groupings, and ancient cataloging.

Keep the distinction clearCuneiform is not a language, and not every tablet is Sumerian. Most surviving tablets are routine records rather than secret religious revelations.

Chapter 4 · c. 9000–3100 BCE · counting develops into early writing

Memory Becomes a Mark

Counting systems slowly became writing, transforming administration into an archive that could preserve language, power, and imagination.

Long before full sentences appeared, people counted. Small clay tokens represented goods; seals identified institutions and transactions; impressed marks made obligations visible. A flock, a measure of barley, or a delivery of oil could now be checked against something outside human memory.

Tokens and sealed containers solved a practical problem: how to verify goods when the sender, carrier, and receiver were different people. Once the token’s shape was impressed on the container, the mark could substitute for the object. When the marks moved onto flat tablets, information became easier to inspect and compare. Abstraction had acquired a surface.

Imagine a disagreement at a storehouse. One person remembers delivering more than another person remembers receiving. Before a record exists, the argument depends on memory, reputation, and witnesses. An external mark changes the argument: the participants can point to something. This imagined exchange is not a translation of an early tablet. It makes the stakes visible. A mark can protect a claim, but the person who controls the marks can also control which claims appear legitimate. Record keeping is a practical invention with moral consequences built into its use.

Evidence boundaryProto-cuneiform is partly deciphered and largely administrative. It should not be treated as if every early sign had a certain modern-language equivalent.

Chapter 5 · c. 4000–3100 BCE

Uruk: The City Writes Itself

At Uruk, architecture, administration, worship, and writing combined into one of humanity’s earliest great urban experiments.

Imagine Uruk at dawn: mudbrick walls catching the first light, boats moving through canals, workers entering courtyards, animals arriving, grain measured into jars. The scene is reconstructed from buildings, tools, seal impressions, plant remains, and tablets—not from an eyewitness diary. Even so, the city’s scale is real.

Uruk gathered labor, food, craft, worship, and administration into institutions larger than kinship alone. Cylinder seals rolled miniature scenes across wet clay. Beveled-rim bowls standardized rations. Canals joined fields to urban storehouses. The technologies were social as well as mechanical: schedules, measures, offices, trained specialists, and shared symbols.

A city is not simply a large village. It depends on flows: food from fields, water through canals, labor through institutions, and information through records. Uruk’s monumental precincts coordinated those flows while expressing a sacred order. The temple was an economic institution, but calling it only a warehouse would miss the world its builders believed they inhabited.

Evidence boundaryScenes are clearly reconstructed from archaeological evidence. Inanna is historically worshipped and also appears as a literary character in texts copied over many centuries.

Chapter 7 · c. 23rd century BCE · a life within the Akkadian dynasty

Enheduanna Finds Her Voice

A priestess positioned between empire and temple became the earliest named author whose literary identity still reaches modern readers.

Enheduanna was a daughter of Sargon of Akkad and high priestess of the moon god at Ur. Texts transmitted under her name make her the earliest known author whose identity stands before us with unusual clarity. Politics placed her in office; poetry made her presence endure.

Her office linked the Akkadian dynasty to the venerable cult of Nanna at Ur. That political purpose does not empty her hymns of religious depth. Ancient roles were rarely divided into modern categories such as personal, governmental, and spiritual. Enheduanna could be a royal daughter, institutional leader, devotee, and literary voice at the same time.

Think of the difference between occupying an office and finding a voice within it. A high priestess served a religious institution whose authority was also public and political. Her position connected a ruling family to a sacred city. The poems associated with her do more than announce that arrangement. They portray vulnerability, appeal, and the desire to be heard. Their force comes partly from the contrast: a person linked to enormous power can still speak as someone threatened by its loss. Rank does not remove the need for recognition.

Evidence boundaryAuthorship and transmission are active scholarly questions. The texts should be presented neither as a modern autobiography nor as an anonymous work with no connection to Enheduanna.

Chapter 25 · 1800s

When Cuneiform Spoke Again

Decipherment restored Mesopotamia to readable history while archaeology and empire determined where its recovered objects would go.

For centuries, cuneiform signs were visible but unread. Nineteenth-century scholars used multilingual inscriptions, especially the Behistun inscription, to unlock Old Persian, Elamite, and Babylonian forms. Decipherment was a collective achievement, despite the famous names attached to it.

Imagine being shown a page of signs with no teacher able to pronounce them. Their shapes are clear, but clarity of shape is not understanding. Decipherment begins by looking for constraints: repeated sequences, names, titles, parallel texts, and languages that may be related to something already known. A proposed reading becomes stronger when it explains new material rather than only the example that inspired it. The achievement is cumulative. One insight can open a door, but many independent checks are needed before the room beyond it becomes recognizable.

The Behistun inscription functioned like a vast comparative key because versions of the same royal proclamation appeared in three languages. Decipherment advanced through proposed sign values tested against names, grammar, and repeated passages. Rival scholars could make errors, but claims became reviewable rather than intuitive.
